This safari offer visitors an opportunity to visit the lowland gorillas in Congo and the wildlife in Rwanda. Kahuzi-Biega national park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its existence of the famous for habituated Lowland gorillas.
Depending on your location in Kigali, our company representative-guide/driver will pick you up and drive you to the Congo border. Cross through Cyangugu border to Bukavu town in Democratic Republic of Congo. On arrival at Bukavu, nearest town to Kahuzi Biega, advance to your lodge for dinner and overnight stay at Panorama Hotel for mid-range/Hotel Elizabeth for budget
Note that your Rwanda Visa expires immediately you cross into Congo so you will have to reapply for another while at the border and find it ready after the tour.
On the 2nd day of your 4 Days Lowland gorillas national park and Akagera national park Safari, After enjoying your breakfast at the lodge, drive to the park headquarters for about 45 minutes for briefing about the Eastern lowland gorillas. At 9am, you will then set off to your fascinating experience of the lowland gorillas in the valleys of Kahuzi as you encounter different mammals, birds and primates. It’s usually a 1-6 hours’ experience of the jungle, depending on their movement while watching them interact/play with each other as you take photos and videos. You will get to spend up to 4 hours with the lowland gorillas once you have located a gorilla group/family.
You will then descend back and meet up with your driver. You will drive back to the border and cross into Rwanda where you will take a break around Nyungwe forest. Dinner and overnight stay at Gisakura Visitor Center for budget/Nyungwe top Hill View Hotel for mid-range
After breakfast, set off to Akagera national park located in the eastern part of Rwanda via Kigali city with en-route lunch. Connect to Akagera national park. Upon arrival at the park, proceed to check-in your lodge with en-route game viewing. Dinner and overnight stay at Akagera game lodge for mid-range/Karenge bush Camp for budget
After a morning breakfast, you will embark on your morning game drive around the park for a rewarding wildlife views. Expect to encounter the Big five including the Lions, elephants, buffaloes, leopards, cape buffaloes and the recently introduced Rhinos along with other animals including; giraffes, warthogs, waterbucks, zebras, hyenas and different antelope species. The game drive may last for about 2-3 hours.
In the afternoon, the driver will pick up for a boat cruise on Lake Ihema-the second largest lake in Rwanda after Lake Kivu. The boat trip exposes you to plenty of wildlife on the lakeshores which, come to cool off and drink water including hippos, buffaloes, huge crocodiles and birds such as malachite kingfisher and fish eagle. After the amazing boat trip, drive to Kigali and you will be dropped off at your own accommodation in Kigali or at Kigali airport for your night flight back home. End of safari
The best time to visit for lowland gorilla trekking is during the dry season, from June to September and December to February. This is also ideal for wildlife viewing in Akagera National Park.
Yes, you will need to apply for a visa to enter the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Your Rwanda visa expires once you cross into Congo, so a new visa must be obtained at the border.
The lowland gorilla trek can take between 1 to 6 hours depending on the movement of the gorillas. Once a gorilla family is located, you will spend up to 4 hours observing them.
In Akagera, you can see the Big Five (lions, leopards, elephants, buffaloes, and rhinos), as well as giraffes, zebras, hippos, crocodiles, and many bird species.
This safari is recommended for travelers aged 15 and above, especially for gorilla trekking. Younger children can join the wildlife safari in Akagera but must be accompanied by adults at all times.
